How long do dental implants take?
For most people, from the first appointment to the final tooth takes about three to six months. Most of that time is the implant healing in the bone, which you can spend at home. That is why implants for visitors are usually split into two trips.
Trip one
About 1 week in Goa
- Examination and X-rays, with a 3D scan if needed
- Implant placed under local anaesthetic
- Healing check before you fly
At home
3–6 months
- The bone grows onto the implant
- Normal life; a temporary tooth can often be worn
- WhatsApp the clinic if anything feels wrong
Trip two
1–2 weeks in Goa
- Implant checked; moulds or a scan taken
- Crown, bridge or denture made in the lab
- New tooth fitted and the bite adjusted
If a bone graft is needed first, healing takes longer. Sometimes an implant can be placed on the same day a tooth is taken out, or a temporary tooth fitted straight away, but whether that suits you depends on the bone and gum.
Trip one: planning and placing the implant
- An examination and X-rays (and a 3D scan where needed) to check the bone and plan the implant.
- The implant is placed under local anaesthetic.
- A short review before you fly, to check healing has started well.
Allow about a week in Goa. Book the first appointment early in your stay.
Trip two: the new tooth
- The implant is checked, and moulds or a scan are taken for the crown, bridge or denture.
- The final tooth is fitted and the bite adjusted.
Allow about one to two weeks, because the crown is made in a dental lab between visits.
Full-mouth implants
When most or all teeth in a jaw are missing, a few implants can hold a full set of teeth, either fixed in place or as a denture that clips on and off. These need more planning and sometimes more visits. If you are considering this, send your X-rays and a description on WhatsApp before you travel so the trips can be planned. Is Goa a good place for implants?
What matters most is not the country but the dentist, the implant system and the follow-up. Wherever you have implants, ask:
- Who will plan and place the implant, and what is their training? Dr. Laura is a Prosthodontist and Oral Implantologist.
- Which implant brand and size will be used? Ask for it in writing, so any dentist can later find matching parts.
- Will I get copies of my X-rays and a written plan?
- What happens if something goes wrong between trips? You should be able to reach the clinic easily; WhatsApp works well across time zones.
Looking after implants back home
Implants need the same care as natural teeth: brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular check-ups. Your dentist where you live can do routine check-ups and cleaning, and you can see Dr. Laura again on your next trip home.

Your dentist
Dr. Laura Albuquerque
Dr. Laura Albuquerque is a Prosthodontist and Oral Implantologist. She plans the implant and the tooth on top of it together, which matters most for people who will not be nearby for frequent visits.
Common questions
How much do dental implants cost in Goa?
It depends on how many implants you need, whether a bone graft is needed, and what goes on top: a crown, a bridge or a denture. Dr. Laura will explain the full cost after examining you and taking X-rays, before treatment starts.
Can I fly after having an implant placed?
Most people can fly within a few days of a straightforward implant. Dr. Laura will check healing before you go and tell you when it is safe for you.
Which type of implant is best?
There is no single best brand for everyone. Ask for a well-established implant system with parts that dentists abroad can get, and keep the brand and size in writing.
Can I have the implant in Goa and the crown done abroad?
It is possible, but it is usually simpler for the same dentist to plan both. If you prefer to finish abroad, take the implant brand, size and X-rays with you.
I am in the Gulf and visit often. Does that change anything?
Shorter, more frequent trips suit implants well: the implant on one visit and the tooth a few months later on the next.
