Common problems on holiday
- Toothache. Take ordinary painkillers as directed on the pack, and avoid very hot, cold or sweet food on that side. Book a visit; pain that wakes you at night usually needs treatment.
- A broken tooth or lost filling. Keep the area clean, chew on the other side, and avoid hard food until it is fixed. Most can be repaired in one visit.
- A crown that has come off. Keep it safe and bring it with you; it can often be cleaned and fixed back on.
- Swelling. Swelling of the gum can be seen at the clinic. If your face is swelling, especially with a fever or difficulty swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department straight away.
What fits into a holiday
- A check-up and clean, fillings and teeth whitening: usually one visit each.
- Root canal treatment: usually one or two visits, plus a cap for back teeth.
- Crowns and bridges: usually two visits, from a few days to two weeks apart.
- Implants need a few months to heal, so they are usually split over two trips. See the guide for implants when you live abroad.
